A Central Coast family is grieving the loss of 17-year-old Andrea Diaz Mondragon, who drowned over the weekend near Three Rivers by Sequoia National Park. This tragedy marks the ninth drowning death in Tulare County this year.
Andrea, who was preparing for her senior year and aspired to be a nurse, was visiting Sequoia National Park for the first time with her family when she slipped and fell into the river. A strong current quickly overwhelmed her brother and a friend who attempted a rescue.
Despite immediate efforts by those present, including attempts to fashion a rope from clothing, Andrea could not be reached in time. First responders later pulled her from the water and transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Her loved ones are now sharing her story to raise awareness.
The Tulare County Sheriff's Office is reminding the public about the hidden dangers of rivers, noting that currents can be deceptively strong and harbor submerged debris. They urge everyone to exercise extreme caution around all waterways.
