A devastating incident occurred on February 19th, when a 16-year-old boy lost his life following a brutal dog attack. The tragedy unfolded as the teenager was engaged in one of his favorite pastimes: fishing in a private pond situated on his family's property.
The dogs involved, described as pit bull mixes, allegedly belonged to a neighbor, Thomas Sutton, 42, who resides on an adjacent property. While the exact number of animals involved remains unclear, the coroner indicated it was several. The young victim, Gabriel Barron, was reportedly fishing in the pond that bordered Sutton's property when the attack took place.
Daleville police and the Dale County Sheriff's Office are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault. Thomas Sutton was separately arrested on Sunday on charges of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. The dogs responsible for the attack have been taken into custody by authorities. Gabriel's passing has deeply affected his community; he is remembered as an outdoor enthusiast who loved fishing, weightlifting, and riding ATVs.
He is survived by his mother, Tanya, father, Charles, and six siblings. Nationally, dog bite incidents are a significant concern, with nearly 1,000 Americans requiring emergency care annually and approximately 12,480 individuals hospitalized due to dog bite injuries, according to DogsBite.org.
