A Chicago family is devastated following the death of their 16-year-old son, Alex Blacio, who was killed in an e-scooter accident. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on Monday in the North Center neighborhood. Blacio lost control of his electric scooter while traveling north on Western Avenue and was subsequently hit by a Freightliner semi-truck.
Blacio was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center after sustaining critical injuries. His family is struggling to come to terms with the loss of a promising young life, especially as his birthday on August 25th and his senior year at Lakeview High School were fast approaching.
Family members highlighted the lack of safe infrastructure for scooters and bikes on the street where the accident occurred, calling it dangerous. They also expressed deep gratitude for the community's overwhelming support through a GoFundMe campaign and vigil held earlier this week. Police have stated that citations are pending and the investigation continues.
