A teenage hiker, identified as Marcus, died after a fall on Mt Baldy on December 29, 2025. His companion called for help from a spot with cell reception, providing GPS coordinates for rescue crews.
Recovery efforts were complicated by high winds, preventing a helicopter operation on Monday. However, rescuers successfully retrieved the body on Tuesday. The sheriff's office reported rescuing five other hikers from the mountain in the preceding five days.
Mt Baldy, a peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, has become exceptionally dangerous, with more than 14 deaths since 2020 and over 100 rescues. Authorities emphasize the extreme risks, especially with unpredictable winter weather, and advise against novice hikers attempting its trails.
