A young hero, 14-year-old Shelby Quigley, has received the exceptionally rare Royal Humane Society Silver Medal for her courageous actions in the River Wyre. Shelby risked her own life on May 17, 2025, when she saw 15-year-old Lotus Bowker struggling in the water near Garstang Cricket Club. She removed her heavy clothing and plunged into the strong currents to rescue Lotus.
Despite being repeatedly pulled under herself, Shelby heroically held Lotus at the surface. Off-duty anaesthetist Steve Wiggans and bystander Neil Quinn arrived to assist, performing CPR after Lotus was pulled to the bank, having been submerged for approximately eight minutes. Lotus was taken to Royal Preston Hospital and later transferred to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.
Tragically, Lotus Bowker passed away in the early hours of May 18, 2025, following multiple cardiac arrests and severe hypothermia. The coroner noted that Lotus, who had a Developmental Learning Disorder, entered the river despite not being a strong swimmer. The Royal Humane Society Secretary commended Shelby's selfless persistence, stating she gave Lotus the best possible chance of survival.
