The city was heavily impacted by smoke, smog, and a pungent smell. Fox was forced to make rapid changes to his plans when train and road transport south of Bordeaux were shut down.
Determined to continue, he cycled 26 miles to catch the last train to Bordeaux, arriving with mere minutes to spare. From there, he hired a taxi to bypass the immediate danger zone.
Fox then embarked on an extensive 125-mile cycle ride to circumvent the fires, eventually reaching the coastal town of Biarritz. He expressed shock at the extent of the devastation, noting the area was still desolate despite being miles from the main fire fronts.
Firefighters continue to battle blazes in the Gironde region, amid forecasts of another heatwave. Similar fires are also active in Spain and Portugal. Fox, returning to London soon, cited his experience as a testament to the value of perseverance.
