A dedicated middle school educator, Kevin Burns, tragically lost his life on August 14th following a snorkeling incident off the coast of Jupiter, Florida. Mr. Burns, who had taught U.S. history and civics at Jupiter Middle School for more than twenty years, was a deeply respected member of his community.
While snorkeling with a friend near a reef, approximately half a mile offshore, the two men were caught by an unexpectedly strong current. They were unable to swim back to the reef and decided to head towards shore.
Upon reaching dry land, the friend realized Mr. Burns was missing and immediately contacted emergency services. A search helicopter from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office eventually located Mr. Burns in the water. He was transported to a medical center but was pronounced deceased.
School principal Lisa Hastey noted Mr. Burns's "unwavering commitment to education" and his significant influence on students. His parents shared that one former student was inspired to become a history teacher because of him. A beachside celebration of life is planned.
