A diver was injured in a shark attack off the coast of Tasmania on Saturday, July 15, 2026. The 31-year-old man was diving near Adventure Bay on Bruny Island when he was bitten by what is believed to be a 2-metre broadnose sevengill shark. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his forearm and was airlifted to a hospital in stable condition. Fellow divers assisted him back to shore.
This incident is the latest in a recent spate of shark attacks in Australian waters. Last month, a shark attack in Sydney left a woman critically injured. In June, a man died after being attacked while fishing off Western Australia, and in May, two fatal attacks occurred off Queensland and Western Australia.
Shark encounters in Australia have shown a gradual rise, averaging nearly 29 incidents per year over the last decade, up from approximately 16 per year in the 2000s. Police reported no further sightings of the shark in the remote area.
