Sydney Tram Fire Halts Services
5 Mar
Summary
- A small fire on a tram roof caused service suspensions.
- Services were halted for about four hours on Thursday.
- Union demands urgent investigation into the third tram fire this week.

Light rail services connecting central Sydney and its eastern suburbs experienced a four-hour suspension on Thursday. This disruption followed a small fire that erupted on the roof of a tram during the morning peak hour. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at the Chalmers Street stop, near Central Station, to address the blaze on the vehicle.
As a safety precaution, the private operator, Transdev, halted all services on the L2 and L3 lines, which run between Circular Quay and Randwick and Kingsford. This decision was made in light of recent similar incidents. The Rail and Tram Union (RTBU) has called for an immediate investigation, noting that this incident marks the third tram fire reported within the past week.
