First responders were quick to the scene, and Nico's friends were commended for their bravery in pulling him from the water. He was rushed to Sydney Children's Hospital in critical condition with severe leg injuries and underwent emergency surgery.
His family has shared the heartbreaking prognosis, stating that Nico has been in a coma and his brain is unresponsive. A GoFundMe campaign has been established by a family friend to assist with expenses, having already raised over AUD$122,000.
This attack was the first in a series of four shark maulings in New South Wales in the days that followed, leading to the closure of swimming spots on the northern beaches.
