Newly Built Water Tank Collapses During Testing in Surat

In Surat district, a newly constructed overhead water tank collapsed on Monday during a crucial testing process in Tadkeshwar village. The structure, built at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore, was designed to supply drinking water to 14 local villages. Approximately 9 lakh litres of water had been filled into the 11 lakh litre capacity tank over two days prior to the collapse.
Following the incident, the state government took immediate action, suspending three Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) officials posted in Surat. These suspended officers include superintending engineer Ankit Garasiya, executive engineer Rajnikant Chaudhary, and deputy engineer Jay Chaudhary.
Authorities have also ordered a halt to all pending payments to the construction contractor, identified as Mehsana-based Jayanti Super Construction. Plans are underway to initiate criminal proceedings against the company owners. Three women workers near the site sustained injuries due to the collapse, which occurred after three years of construction.
