Surat Drained: 1.1 Billion Liters Pumped After Floods
15 Jul
Summary
- Over 1.1 billion liters of floodwater pumped from Surat buildings.
- 991 residents diagnosed with skin diseases at health camps.
- 34 bodies of missing persons recovered after heavy rainfall.

In the aftermath of severe flooding, Surat has undertaken a significant dewatering operation, pumping more than 1.1 billion liters of water from basements of high-rise apartments and commercial complexes. This volume is equivalent to filling 400 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The effort, utilizing over 254 pumps, targeted areas heavily impacted by swollen creeks, including Varachha and Udhna.
The torrential rains, which saw up to 14.5 inches of rainfall on July 7, also led to widespread inundation across 430 locations in the city. Tragically, the receding floodwaters revealed the full extent of the disaster, with 34 bodies of individuals reported missing during the downpour being recovered. Efforts to clean affected streets and localities are ongoing.
Concurrently, health concerns have emerged, with 15 medical camps conducted in the affected zones. Of the 4,529 individuals attended, 991 were diagnosed with skin diseases, a condition attributed to extended contact with contaminated water. Other common ailments treated included fever and respiratory problems, with 14 patients admitted to municipal hospitals for further care.
