The storm's wide band of fierce wind and rain has already knocked down power in several eastern towns and villages, and authorities have evacuated around 50,000 families from high-risk areas. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has warned that Fung-wong could affect a vast expanse of the country, including the central province of Cebu, which was hit hardest by Typhoon Kalmaegi earlier this week, and the densely populated capital region of metropolitan Manila.
The Philippines is still reeling from the devastation caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left at least 204 people dead in central island provinces before pummeling Vietnam, where at least five were killed. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of emergency due to the extensive damage from Kalmaegi and the expected calamity from Fung-wong.
