Sudan Mine Collapse: 11 Dead, 30 Injured
21 Sep
Summary
- 11 miners died and 30 were injured in a gold mine shaft collapse.
- This is the second informal gold mine collapse in Sudan within a week.
- Conflict and weak oversight contribute to unsafe mining conditions.
In northeastern Sudan, a devastating collapse at an informal gold mine has claimed the lives of at least 11 miners, with 30 others sustaining injuries. Search operations are ongoing for individuals believed to be trapped beneath the debris in Oni, a remote area of the Red Sea state. This incident follows another fatal mine collapse just last Sunday in western Sudan.
These recurring disasters underscore the perilous conditions prevalent in Sudan's numerous small-scale and informal mining operations. Weak safety standards and a lack of oversight are constant threats, particularly as the nation grapples with widespread conflict and humanitarian crises.
Last week's incident saw at least 82 fatalities at a different gold mine, an area controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has significantly increased the dangers associated with resource extraction. Experts suggest substantial gold smuggling fuels the conflict.
