Emergency culvert repairs are now underway on State Route 542, also known as Mt. Baker Highway, near Maple Falls in Whatcom County. The culvert, which normally carries Bruce Creek beneath the highway, was plugged by debris from historic flooding that occurred last month. This blockage caused Bruce Creek to overflow, spilling water and debris across Mt. Baker Highway and necessitating its closure.
Although Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews have cleared enough debris to reopen the roadway, water continues to flow across the highway near milepost 28. Strider Construction crews have begun clearing the plugged culvert and commencing repairs. The work is anticipated to last a few weeks, with an expected completion date in early February.
During this period, travelers heading through the affected area should prepare for delays. Flaggers will be managing alternating eastbound and westbound traffic during daytime hours. Drivers are urged to obey warning signs and reduce their speed as they navigate the sections where water may still be present on the highway.
