10 Jul
Summary
- Newly built retaining wall shows major cracks, raising collapse fears.
- Residents and traders ordered to relocate from downhill area.
- Continuous rainfall cited as cause; locals allege poor construction.

A newly built retaining wall near the Sringeri taluk office and Goligudda Hill is showing alarming signs of instability, prompting immediate safety advisories for nearby residents and traders. The structure, erected just six months ago at a cost of Rs 1.8 crore to prevent hill erosion, has developed major cracks and begun bulging, raising fears of an imminent collapse.
Continuous rainfall over the past four to five days is believed to have triggered the damage. Residents living downhill have been advised to relocate, with provisions being made for those without alternate accommodation and for traders to store their goods. Officials plan to remove mud from the top of the wall to alleviate pressure.
Locals and former MLA DN Jeevaraj have voiced concerns about the wall's substandard and unscientific construction, demanding an inquiry into the officials and contractor involved. They warn that a collapse could endanger nearby houses, the dargah, and the taluk office.
