On October 2, 2025, a 60-year-old man from Springfield was found dead at a campground in Arkansas. The Newton County Sheriff's Office received a call about a welfare concern at Sam's Throne near Mt. Judea, after the man's son had not heard from him for a couple of days.
Upon arrival, the deputy found the man's campsite disturbed, with evidence of a struggle and injury. Drag marks led from the campground into the nearby woods, where the man was eventually discovered deceased, several yards from his camp. The family had informed authorities that the man had sent photos of a bear in his camp just a few days earlier, on September 30.
Investigators believe the extensive injuries found on the man's body are consistent with a large carnivore attack, most likely a bear. The sheriff's office is currently working to locate the bear, contacting local hunters with bear-hunting dogs to assist in the search. Traps have also been set up around the campground, which remains temporarily closed for public safety.
The autopsy results are expected to be expedited and completed on October 3, which will provide more definitive information about the cause of death. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and follow bear safety protocols when camping in the area.
