Spokane County Fire District 3 chief Cody Rohrbach reported that many of the lost homes were within city limits. While no lives have been confirmed lost, officials anticipate that there may be fatalities.
The fire, now spanning 5,390 acres, originated on the West Plains and was propelled by strong winds northeast into Riverside State Park. It subsequently crossed the river, engulfing neighborhoods like Indian Trails and Five Mile Prairie.
Evacuations have been widespread, with the Spokane Convention Center acting as the primary shelter for displaced families. Mayor Lisa Brown declared a state of emergency amid winds gusting between 35 and 45 mph. Governor Bob Ferguson activated the National Guard and planned to visit Spokane on Sunday morning.
Hundreds of firefighters, including 120 personnel from California, are working to contain the blaze. Incident Commander Tom Clemo stated that determining the exact number of destroyed homes will take several days, acknowledging the fire's immense scale.
Simultaneously, another wildfire in the Suncrest area of Stevens County destroyed three homes. The cause of the Old Trails fire is currently under investigation.
