South Korea Flooded: 1 Dead, 4 Injured in Landslide

Southern South Korea has been inundated by torrential rainfall, leading to one confirmed fatality and four injuries. The city of Geoje recorded over 800mm of rain, triggering a devastating landslide. Rescuers found one resident in cardiac arrest after their apartment building was hit, and they were later pronounced dead at a hospital. Two other individuals sustained injuries in Geoje, with two more injured in neighboring cities.

The heavy rains, which began on Saturday, have prompted authorities to issue warnings and order the evacuation of around 390 people. Power outages affected approximately 3,580 homes, and twelve schools and kindergartens were flooded. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook directed emergency services to prioritize the rescue of stranded residents.

Separately, the Philippine capital, Manila, experienced severe flooding and traffic snarls due to monsoon rains. The government suspended work and advised schools to move to online classes. This follows weeks of intermittent monsoon activity and a recent storm that affected millions and resulted in at least 23 deaths, primarily from landslides and floods in northern Luzon.
