A powerful avalanche struck the Himalayan valley of Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district late Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 10:12 PM, with visuals from CCTV cameras depicting a massive wave of snow descending the slopes, engulfing residential homes and hotels in the Sarbal region.
Despite the destructive potential evident in the footage, which shows houses and vehicles being covered by deep snow, authorities confirmed that no lives were lost or injuries sustained. Emergency response teams were quick to assess the affected zone, confirming that occupants were safely indoors during the snowslide.
The avalanche in Sonamarg is part of a broader pattern of heavy snowfall affecting the Kashmir Valley, which has led to travel disruptions. The Jammu-Srinagar national highway has been temporarily closed, and flights at Srinagar International Airport have been cancelled, stranding tourists and commuters.
