A Colorado snowplow driver has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on Interstate 70. Colton Wiedman, 29, faces multiple charges, including careless driving causing death.
The incident on January 29 involved a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow losing control near Herman Gulch. The plow crossed the median, striking an eastbound Toyota Tacoma, which then collided with a westbound BMW.
Wiedman's plow continued eastbound, impacting a Sprinter van carrying the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers youth hockey team. The van, carrying players typically aged 11 and 12, was forced down an embankment.
Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana Villegas, the van's driver and father of a player, was pronounced dead at the scene. Eight passengers from the van sustained injuries, with one airlifted in critical condition.
An arraignment hearing for Wiedman is scheduled for early May. He was placed on administrative leave following the crash.
