Firefighter slams Shrewsbury station road chaos
9 Mar
Summary
- New road layout causes unnecessary delays for fire service.
- Shropshire Council spent £3.8m on controversial changes.
- Petition with 6,800 signatures demands road return.

Emergency service response times in Shrewsbury are being significantly hampered by a controversial new road layout near the railway station, a firefighter has reported. Rob Cartwright highlighted that traffic congestion, exacerbated by the reduced lanes and cycle path, is causing unnecessary delays and pressure on emergency drivers.
Shropshire Council invested around £3.8 million of government funds to transform Castle Foregate into a single lane, incorporating a cycle path and a 'floating' bus stop. This construction did not involve consultation with the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, which is located less than half a mile away and frequently uses the route.
