One year following a devastating magnitude 6.8 earthquake on January 7, 2025, the city of Shigatse in the Xizang autonomous region is witnessing a remarkable recovery. Survivors of the disaster, which claimed 126 lives and destroyed tens of thousands of homes in Dingri county, are now inhabiting new, reinforced concrete houses. Government-led reconstruction efforts have successfully rebuilt more than 22,000 homes and repaired over 10,500 others across seven counties.
The ambitious reconstruction program commenced in early March 2025 and was completed within eight months. This rapid progress was achieved despite numerous challenges, including the remote locations of many of the 1,032 construction sites. Teams of over 61,000 workers, supported by 2,600 managers and 134 enterprises, battled extreme cold, oxygen deprivation, and difficult terrain at altitudes between 4,000 and 5,300 meters.
