Young Couple Dies in Tragic M1 Speed Crash
14 Sep
Summary
- A speeding car lost control on the M1, colliding with a tree.
- No alcohol or mobile phone use was detected in either driver.
- The couple had their whole lives ahead of them.
A devastating high-speed collision on the M1 motorway resulted in the deaths of a young Sheffield couple, Umar Akhbar, 23, and Aiza Nageen, 24, as they were returning from a meal. Assistant Sheffield coroner Hannah Berry confirmed their deaths were due to injuries sustained in the crash on November 13.
The inquest heard that the driver, Umar Akhbar, lost control of the grey BMW near Barnsley. The vehicle veered across three lanes before leaving the road and striking a tree. Forensic investigators determined the car was traveling significantly above the speed limit, though its exact speed could not be precisely calculated. Neither alcohol nor mobile phone usage was found to be a factor in the incident.
A tribute from Aiza Nageen's sister described her as 'one in a million' and 'remarkably wise beyond her years.' The collision investigator noted the extreme damage to the car, further supporting the conclusion of a high-speed impact. The road conditions were reported to be good, with no standing water.
