Canyon Fire Engulfs Acres Near San Diego

A vegetation fire broke out on Sunday afternoon in the canyon area between Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Road. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported the incident around 1:30 PM. As the fire expanded, authorities issued evacuation warnings for zones SDC-1443, SDC-1492, and SDC-1494, with an evacuation order for zone SDC-1444. A temporary evacuation point was established at 4161 Eastgate Mall.
By mid-afternoon, the fire had consumed approximately 6 to 7 acres. Aerial resources, including fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, were deployed to assist ground crews. Later reports indicated the fire had been mapped at 71.1 acres but was subsequently estimated to be between 20 to 25 acres with a moderate spread rate. Several roads, including Vista Sorrento Parkway and Sorrento Valley Boulevard, were closed by the San Diego Police Department.
