Man Critically Injured as Robot Vacuum Erupts in Flames
23 Jul
Summary
- Robot vacuum battery leaked, causing a catastrophic explosion.
- Man sustained burns to 75 percent of his body.
- Device sent for investigation; lithium-ion batteries are dangerous.

On July 2, a robot vacuum cleaner exploded at a home in Brabham, Western Australia, resulting in critical injuries to 25-year-old Lachie Perrem. He sustained burns across 75 percent of his body and was transported to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he has since undergone three surgeries, including skin grafts. The explosion caused significant damage to the property, with windows blown out and interiors scorched.
His mother revealed the vacuum's battery had a leak, and an unrelated cooking incident ignited the device, leading to the severe blast. The faulty vacuum has been sent for investigation to the state's building and energy office. Authorities have warned that lithium-ion batteries, common in these devices, can experience violent thermal runaway, releasing flammable gases and causing intense fires.
As of July 20, Mr. Perrem's recovery is progressing positively, with grafts healing well and significant improvement in hand movement. His feeding tube was removed, marking a milestone in his recovery. Further surgeries are anticipated in the coming months.
