On July 11, 2026, Eugene Springfield Fire crews successfully rescued an individual from a low head dam located on the Willamette River. The operation took place in Springfield's Glenwood neighborhood, near the Interstate 5 bridge. Responders utilized two water rescue boats to reach and free the person from the dam's current.
Both individuals involved in the incident were wearing lifejackets and did not require any medical treatment following the rescue. Low head dams are man-made structures designed to create a consistent water flow, often featuring a significant drop-off. These dangerous structures have posed risks in the past, nearly causing seven drownings in May 2024 and trapping others in July of the same year.
