A retired English professor from Burdwan, Radharani Shaw, aged 81, tragically died from burn injuries after a fire broke out in her north Howrah home on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM at her ancestral house near Pilkhana crossing on GT Road.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a room heater placed too close to a clothes rack ignited the fire. The blaze rapidly spread, consuming the contents of her room, including furniture and appliances. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to bring the flames under control within thirty minutes.
Shaw, who lived alone and was reportedly dealing with age-related health issues, was rescued by emergency personnel and local MLA Goutam Choudhary. She was transported to Howrah District Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Fortunately, the gas cylinder in the kitchen did not explode.
