- The rescue occurred on the Washington Beltway after a high-speed collision.

During a recent incident on the Washington Beltway, NBC correspondent Tom Costello shifted from reporting the news to becoming part of it by aiding in the rescue of a teenage crash victim. Costello witnessed a car traveling at an estimated 100 mph lose control and collide with a concrete barrier, causing the vehicle to disintegrate and catch fire.
Approaching the wreckage, Costello immediately called 911, concerned for the driver's life. He was surprised to find the 17-year-old passenger conscious but in severe pain. As flames intensified, Costello flagged down an orthopedic surgeon. Together with the surgeon and a nurse who also stopped, they managed to pull the critically injured teen from the burning vehicle just moments before it exploded.
