Summary

- At least 39 people were injured, with two in critical condition.
- The town of Pomas suffered severe damage, hospitalizing fifteen residents.

A tornado of rare and intense ferocity struck the Aude prefecture in France's Occitanie region late on Monday afternoon. This violent weather event caused significant damage and left at least 39 people injured, with two of those individuals in critical condition. The town of Pomas, home to about 1,000 residents, bore the brunt of the tornado's destructive path.
In Pomas, fifteen people required hospitalization, and approximately 300 homes sustained damage. Power was disrupted across ten towns, leaving about 2,800 households without electricity, though power was restored to half of them by Tuesday. Firefighters continued to search the area for potential victims, although no one was reported missing. The French interior minister described the tornado as being of "rare intensity."
While tornadoes are not uncommon in France, they are typically weaker and smaller, making them difficult to forecast. Météo-France had issued an orange alert, warning of conditions conducive to swirling wind phenomena, with expected winds up to 75 miles per hour, hail, and thunderstorms. Farther south, hail storms interrupted La Vuelta cycling race, leading to the cancellation of Stage 3.
