Rail services connecting West Yorkshire and Manchester have experienced significant disruption following a fire in the Standedge Tunnel over the weekend.
The blaze, which occurred within the tunnel near Marsden and Stalybridge, caused lines to be blocked. Operator TransPennine Express confirmed that crews worked through the night, but repair works were extended until the end of Monday.
This incident impacted services originating from Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria, as well as from Liverpool Lime Street. Some trains were rerouted via the Calder Valley, with adjustments to calling stations. Passengers traveling between Manchester and Huddersfield were advised to change at Dewsbury for replacement services, while those heading from Leeds to Huddersfield could travel via Sheffield or also use replacement services at Dewsbury.
