23 Dec
Summary
- Eight people were hospitalized due to e-bike and e-scooter accidents in Queensland.
- Queensland sees five daily hospitalizations from e-scooter crashes.
- The state government awaits a report before considering new safety measures.

A recent spate of e-bike and e-scooter incidents in Queensland resulted in eight people, including a teenage girl, requiring hospitalization. These incidents occurred across various locations including Ashgrove, Queentown, Capella, Woodridge, Cairns, Hervey Bay, and Bli Bli over a short period. These events highlight a growing concern for e-mobility safety.
Research indicates that five individuals are hospitalized daily in Queensland due to e-scooter crashes, with children under 16 accounting for one-third of Australian fatalities. Despite these alarming statistics, the Queensland government has decided against immediate tougher measures. They are currently awaiting a parliamentary inquiry report, due in March, to inform future decisions.
Nationally, at least 14 people have died from e-bike or e-scooter incidents in the past year. Neighboring New South Wales is considering lowering speed limits and revising e-bike definitions to enhance safety, especially for younger riders, in anticipation of increased usage.
