Summer Blaze: Electrical Fires Surge in Pune
13 Mar
Summary
- Electrical fires significantly increase during Pune's hot summer months.
- Dry foliage fires also rise, posing risks to historic sites like Shaniwar Wada.
- Citizens advised on managing electrical loads and maintaining safety precautions.

As temperatures ascend, Pune faces a notable surge in fire incidents, predominantly from electrical short circuits. Data from the past three years indicates a clear increase during March, April, and May. This trend is linked to heightened usage of electrical appliances like fans and air conditioners, overloading circuits in warmer conditions.
Dry foliage and garbage fires also escalate from February onwards due to the dry spell. These fires, easily ignited by discarded cigarettes or electrical faults, spread rapidly with strong winds and high temperatures. The city's fire department coordinates with the Forest Department for controlled burning and creating fire lines to mitigate risks.
Vehicle fires also see an uptick, with high temperatures straining engines and electrical systems. Overheated batteries, faulty wiring, and fuel leaks can initiate sparks. Residents are urged to manage electrical loads, perform regular maintenance, and promptly report any signs of trouble to prevent major incidents.
