A tragic incident has led to the death of a 23-year-old MBA student at the College of Agriculture in Pune. The student, Chaitanya Kundalik Chavan, passed away on Tuesday, ten days after receiving an electric shock from a metal water cooler on the college campus.
The incident prompted a significant protest by students on Wednesday. They are demanding the suspension of four college officials and a thorough audit of all electrical connections within the institution. In response, college authorities have established a committee to investigate the matter and have assured that appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible.
Following the event, temporary safety measures have been implemented. A rubber mat now sits beneath the water cooler, and the electricity sockets above it have been sealed with tape. Chavan, who came from a farming family in Beed district, was reportedly electrocuted due to a potential short circuit while filling water. His roommate highlighted previous concerns about the water cooler's functionality that were allegedly ignored.
Protesting students also voiced concerns about the lack of an on-campus medical dispensary, emphasizing the need for immediate medical attention during emergencies. The university's Vice Chancellor has acknowledged the sadness of the situation and promised a swift inquiry and necessary actions based on the committee's findings.
