11,000 Speeders Caught: New Fines Start in Pueblo

Pueblo, Colorado is now implementing automated speed enforcement cameras, issuing $75 fines for speeding in the I-25 and Highway 50 construction zone. This follows a warning period initiated on June 30, during which 11,000 drivers received notifications for exceeding the reduced speed limit.
The fines, which begin on July 30, target drivers traveling 10 miles per hour or more over the posted 50 mph limit. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) states the program's main objective is to enhance safety for both drivers and construction crews working on the extensive reconstruction project.
CDOT reports significant success in reducing speeds, with a 67% decrease during the warning period alone and up to 90% in other corridors. Colorado law authorized these cameras in 2023, and six are currently deployed in Pueblo. The collected fines are reinvested into the program's operation.
The reconstruction of the I-25 and Highway 50 interchange, a five-mile project involving new bridge structures and roadway improvements, is slated for completion in early summer 2027. CDOT is considering expanding camera use to school zones.
