Puducherry has recorded 367 road accidents in the last three months, resulting in 28 fatalities and numerous injuries. A concerning trend reveals that approximately 70% of these fatalities involved two-wheeler riders, with pedestrians also being victims. The majority of these tragic incidents occurred in suburban and rural areas, particularly on the Puducherry-Cuddalore, Puducherry-Villupuram, and Puducherry-Kalapet routes.
Traffic police have intensified enforcement, issuing fines to over 15,000 two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets, a violation strongly linked to severe head injuries. Other major offenses include mobile phone use while driving and red-light jumping. Despite these efforts, motorists continue to disregard traffic rules, contributing to the ongoing accident toll.
To combat this issue, the Puducherry Transport Department has partnered with the voluntary organization ALERT. This collaboration aims to promote road safety through awareness programs and crucial first-aid training for drivers, conductors, and transport personnel. The initiative also focuses on accident prevention education for students and encourages community involvement in enhancing road safety.
