On October 29, 2025, Hurricane Melissa is wreaking havoc across the Caribbean, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The powerful storm made landfall in eastern Cuba near Chivirico early on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane, after sweeping across Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record.
Melissa is now expected to strike the southeastern or central Bahamas as a strong Category 2 storm on Wednesday, bringing a dangerous storm surge and strong gales. The Bahamas could see up to 10 inches of rain, which could trigger flash floods and landslides. By Wednesday evening, Melissa is forecast to continue northeast, accelerating over the open Atlantic Ocean, and strike Bermuda as a Category 1 hurricane on Thursday.
The hurricane has already been blamed for 7 deaths in the Caribbean, including 3 in Jamaica, 3 in Haiti, and 1 in the Dominican Republic, where another person remains missing. Officials have warned that the "storm of the century" could take days or even weeks to recover in the worst-hit parts of the region.
