On October 10, 2025, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines, killing at least 5 people and causing widespread damage. The quake, centered about 27 miles east of Manay town in Davao Oriental province, triggered landslides and damaged hospitals and schools in the region.
The earthquake prompted evacuations of nearby coastal areas due to a tsunami warning, which was later lifted after small waves were detected but no major flooding occurred. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the government is working to assess the potential damage and has deployed rescue teams and prepared relief operations.
Among the casualties, two patients died of heart attacks at a hospital during the quake, and a resident was struck by debris in Mati city. Two villagers also died and several others were injured in a landslide in a remote gold-mining area. Authorities reported cracks in buildings, including an international airport in Davao city, but no flights were cancelled.
The Philippines is still recovering from a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck last month, killing at least 74 people. The country is also frequently hit by natural disasters, including about 20 typhoons and storms each year, making disaster response a major challenge for the government.
