A beloved grandfather lost his life after encountering a significant pothole while cycling in Pennsylvania. Joseph Kenas, aged 69, was riding on Morris Road in Fort Washington on March 10 when his bicycle hit a large crater.
He sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he passed away three days later. His son recounted the incident, noting that it was a beautiful, warm day, and his father was eager to ride.
The pothole that caused the fatal accident has since been filled. However, residents have indicated that Morris Road frequently has potholes. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has received over 13,000 reports for road issues in southeastern Pennsylvania in the past year.
Two of these reports specifically mentioned craters on Morris Road, with one received on the same day as Kenas' accident. An attorney specializing in bicycle crash victims noted that his clients often report road conditions as the cause of their accidents, highlighting the dangers of potholes for cyclists.
Kenas is remembered as a kind, generous, and patient man who cherished his family. His family has requested donations to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia in lieu of flowers for his funeral.
