Pool Drain Nightmare: Girl Suffers Catastrophic Injury
17 Mar
Summary
- A young girl suffered catastrophic internal damage from a pool drain.
- Her small intestine was pulled from her body due to extreme suction.
- Doctors performed seven surgeries to save her life and reconstruct her system.

A family vacation in Mexico turned into a horrifying ordeal when a young girl suffered a devastating injury due to a faulty resort pool drain. The protective grate over a drain had come undone, exposing powerful suction that trapped the nearly four-year-old. Her father's attempts to free her were unsuccessful due to the intense force, and it took nearly two minutes to shut off the pool pump.
Doctors initially diagnosed a less severe condition, but surgery revealed catastrophic internal damage, including evisceration, where her small intestine was pulled from her body. She was airlifted to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where surgeons performed seven operations over two and a half months to save her life and reconstruct her digestive system.
Today, the child survives on total parenteral nutrition, receiving nutrients directly into her bloodstream. While an intestinal transplant may be a future possibility, her parents are now sharing their story to alert other families to the dangers of unsecured pool drains and the critical need to locate emergency shutoff switches.
