Photographer Fatally Mauled by Polar Bears on Brevoort Island

On August 8, 2024, a tragic incident occurred on Brevoort Island, a remote location in Canada. A 34-year-old man named Christopher Best was fatally attacked by two polar bears while he was taking photographs outside.

Best had been working at a radar site on the island and was awaiting security clearance to start a new role in logistics. Passionate about animal photography, he had posted a photo of a polar bear on his Instagram page the day before his death. When he learned that another bear was outside, he went out with his camera, unaware that a second bear was nearby.

Surveillance footage showed the bears cutting off Best's escape route and charging at him. Despite his efforts to fend them off, he was overpowered and killed in the attack. His mother, Shelly Cox, expressed shock and disbelief upon receiving the news the next morning.

The Nasittuq Corporation, which operates the North Warning System site where the incident took place, has now implemented a variety of new safety measures to prevent future bear attacks. The company stated that they deeply care for the safety and well-being of all their employees and are saddened by this tragic event.
