A significant magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines early Monday, causing considerable disruption and prompting immediate safety measures. The seismic event, centered at sea roughly 13 kilometers southwest of General Santos, generated 1-meter tsunami waves along adjacent coastlines. Authorities reported damage in General Santos, a major commercial hub and tuna-processing city, including the collapse of at least one small building.
In response to the powerful quake, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued an urgent directive for residents in tsunami-vulnerable Philippine areas to evacuate to higher ground. Similar warnings were also issued by Indonesian and Malaysian authorities for their nearby coastal regions. The earthquake's origin has been identified as movement within the Cotabato Trench at a depth of 10 kilometers, striking at 7:37 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
