Derbyshire County Council is currently undertaking resurfacing work on a section of the A54, known locally as the Cat and Fiddle, on the Buxton side. This essential maintenance is scheduled to continue until October.
Despite a designated diversion route through Leek, Staffordshire, some motorists have chosen to bypass the closure by using Macclesfield Old Road. Marcus Murray from the volunteer-run Peak 4x4 Response group emphasized that this alternative path is unsuitable for regular cars. It is characterized by significant obstacles including boulders, steep steps, and washouts, which have led to numerous vehicles becoming stranded and requiring assistance.
