Summary

- Bird-hit incidents rose from 9 to 21 year-over-year.
- Garbage stations and shops identified as bird attractants.
Patna's Jayprakash Narayan International Airport is enhancing its bird control measures following a significant surge in bird-hit incidents. Reflective tapes and ribbons have been installed at strategic locations to deter birds, particularly black kites, which have emerged as a major concern for aircraft safety. This initiative aims to mitigate risks during take-off and landing operations.
The airport recorded 21 bird-hit incidents between January and August of the current year, a stark increase from the nine reported during the same period last year. To address this, the environment, forest, and climate change department has initiated a survey to assess bird populations and their patterns around the airport.
Efforts are also underway to identify and regulate external sources attracting birds. Identified areas include meat and fish shops near Chitkohra roundabout and the Gardanibagh garbage transfer station. Airport authorities are urging the civic body to ensure proper waste disposal to reduce bird activity near operational zones.
