During the New York Knicks championship parade, an off-duty emergency worker sprang into action to save a man's life.
Simone Kelly, 24, a member of the South Orange Volunteer Rescue Squad, witnessed a man climbing onto a subway station entrance, appearing unstable. Kelly quickly assessed the situation, noting the man was unresponsive with decreased respiratory drive and pinpoint pupils, indicative of an overdose.
A spectator provided Kelly with a Narcan kit, which she administered via nasal spray. Police and EMS arrived shortly after. Kelly informed them of the Narcan and her observations, including seeing the man drinking.
Kelly, who hopes to become a doctor, reflected on the importance of harm reduction and addiction awareness. She believes in being in the right place at the right time to make a difference, emphasizing that addiction is not a choice.
