74 Years Later: Pan Am Crash Wreckage Discovered Off PR

The wreckage of Pan Am Flight 526A, known as the Easter Special, has been discovered 74 years after it crashed off the coast of Puerto Rico. The flight, which took off on Good Friday, April 11, 1952, was forced to ditch nine minutes later due to engine failure, resulting in 52 fatalities.

This tragedy prompted the implementation of pre-flight safety briefings for passengers, a now-common practice. A poignant detail from the aftermath involved a doctor finding a soldier's letter to his wife, Gloria Rosario, in her purse, later discovering she was among the 17 survivors.

Recently, an aviation search team located the remains of the "Clipper Endeavor" 2,000 feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean's surface. The discovery offers a sense of closure for families, like Rosario's son, who had long wished for recognition for the victims, especially her cousin who also perished.

The crash investigation revealed chaos during evacuation, with passengers not adequately instructed on using life vests. Pilot John Burn, who had survived a previous fatal crash, faced immense pressure during the emergency. A 2-year-old boy, Mark Van Daalen, was notably rescued by aviator Novetah Davenport.
