The Odisha Fire and Emergency Service (OFES) is bolstering its disaster response capabilities by introducing a specialized hazardous material (Hazmat) vehicle. This advanced unit is set to handle chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) emergencies across the state.
Director-General Sudhansu Sarangi highlighted the Hazmat vehicle as a crucial force multiplier, equipped with sensors for detecting various threats. The vehicle can also assess accidental or deliberate releases of hazardous substances, aiding responders in quickly evaluating danger scales. Inspector-General Uma Shankar Dash noted its ability to reach leak sources in difficult areas, improving operational efficiency.
This Hazmat vehicle features integrated software for real-time data analysis and sharing with command centers. Designed to withstand extreme disaster events, it possesses advanced antennas for rapid emergency assessment. To ensure readiness, OFES personnel are receiving intensive training in specialized domains, including CBRN handling and urban search and rescue, in partnership with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
