Odisha Cracks Down on Deadly Trend of Filming Reels While Driving
11 Oct
Summary
- Surge in road accidents linked to making social media content while driving
- Authorities seize 40+ vehicles, impose hefty penalties to deter reckless behavior
- Awareness campaigns and educational initiatives launched to prioritize safety

As of October 11th, 2025, authorities in the Indian state of Odisha are grappling with a concerning trend that has led to tragic consequences - the growing popularity of filming social media reels while driving. An IPSOS study commissioned by Meta last September revealed that Instagram's Reels feature has become the most popular video format in India, dominating daily viewing habits and cultural influence.
However, this surge in Reels' popularity has also given rise to a dangerous practice, with drivers prioritizing online fame over safety. In the past few months, Odisha has seen a spike in road accidents linked to this reckless behavior, including the heartbreaking case of Rebati and her 8-year-old daughter Reshma, who were crushed to death by a speeding SUV while the drivers were filming a reel.
In response, the state government has taken swift action. Over the past two months, authorities have seized at least 40 vehicles, including two-wheelers and SUVs, that were involved in filming reels while driving recklessly. Offenders have faced hefty penalties, serving as a warning to others. The transport department is also exploring the use of technology to monitor and identify such incidents in real-time.
Alongside enforcement, the state is launching awareness campaigns and educational initiatives to instill a sense of responsibility among young drivers. Schools and colleges are being advised to incorporate road safety lessons, emphasizing the importance of adhering to traffic rules and the dangers of distracted driving. By targeting the younger generation, authorities hope to cultivate a culture of safety that will endure for years to come.
"The rise of social media has undoubtedly transformed the way people interact and share experiences. However, the pursuit of online fame should never come at the cost of safety," said internationally acclaimed sand sculptor Sudarsan Pattnaik, who has been roped in by the transport department to raise awareness on various road safety issues.
Through a combination of stringent enforcement, public awareness, and community engagement, Odisha aims to put an end to this dangerous trend and ensure safer roads for all.
