Two individuals lost their lives and three others sustained critical injuries after a vehicle veered onto a sidewalk on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Authorities reported that 61-year-old Elvin Suarez was allegedly driving under the influence when his Mercedes SUV collided with a parked car, initiating a chain reaction that ended with the SUV striking multiple pedestrians. The victims, identified as Jason Negron, 46, and Michael Saint-Hilaire, 35, were reportedly sitting outside a barbershop.
Three other men, aged between 36 and 52, were hospitalized in critical condition. Witnesses described the vehicle swerving erratically before mounting a median and crashing into the group. Emergency responders and bystanders attempted to rescue individuals trapped under the vehicle. Elvin Suarez has been charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated. The investigation is ongoing, but authorities indicated the incident did not appear to be intentional. GoFundMe campaigns have been created to support the families of Negron and Saint-Hilaire.
