A tragic incident unfolded at a New York City shipyard on Friday when a fire and subsequent explosion claimed one civilian life and injured more than 30 first responders. The event occurred in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood on Staten Island.
Firefighters were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. to address a fire, heavy smoke, and reports of two trapped individuals. Shortly after, a powerful explosion rocked the site, critically injuring a fire marshal with a fractured skull and brain bleed.
In total, 29 firefighters and four emergency medical personnel sustained injuries, ranging from minor to moderate. All injured parties were transported to local hospitals. The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation.
